Game Preorders for April 2021

Hi Everyone!

April is upon us and so are another round of game preorders available in-store and online at The Comic Shop!

Strixhaven: School of Mages is the latest regular expansion for Magic: the Gathering containing 275 new cards to add to your collection! Strixhaven is billed as the most prestigious magic school in the multiverse and includes five different colleges you can explore to see what best fits your play style.

Each school is themed around an enemy color pair and was founded by a different Elder Dragon!

Continuing a theme from the previous set of reprinting awesome cards, Strixhaven includes a subset of 63 instants and sorceries found in the eponymous school’s Mystical Archive! These cards are presented in a unique frame and include a number of favorites from the past.

How about a couple of examples!

Lightning Bolt

The regular versions of these cards look fantastic, but only in Collector Boosters will you find these Japanese versions that I think look even better!

Lightning Bolt

Most Mystical Archive cards will unfortunately not be standard legal, but they will make your eternal and commander decks look fantastic! (Of course now I have to get eight more copies of Lightning Bolt for my collection…)

Additionally! Any purchase of a box or six pre-release packs of Strixhaven: School of Mages will include a foil extended-art Dragonsguard Elite while supplies last!

Dragonsguard Elite

With the continued prohibition on in-store play, pre-release will be once again available over the web at the store’s Discord channel! Come hang out with us and talk about the new and exciting cards that we get to play with!

Registration for the event is available here!

Strixhaven: School of Mages releases April 23rd, 2021.

It’s time for the 2021 Challenger Decks for Magic: the Gathering!

Challenger decks are a great entry point into standard Magic play featuring pre-built decks that are proven in the format.

Featuring four popular archetypes, these decks are suitable to be played out of the box and feature multiple copies of popular cards that allow the deck to function smoothly!

2021 Challenger Decks release April 2nd, 2021!

Game Preorders for March 2021

Hi Everyone!

It’s been a few minutes since we’ve checked in to discuss what cool new gaming products we have coming soon to The Comic Shop!

Candlekeep attracts scholars like a flame attracts moths. Historians, sages, and others who crave knowledge flock to this library fortress to peruse its vast collection of books, scribbled into which are the answers to the mysteries that bedevil them. Many of these books contain their own mysteries—each one a doorway to adventure. Dare you cross that threshold?

Candlekeep Mysteries is a collection of seventeen short, stand-alone D&D adventures designed for characters of levels 1–16. Each adventure begins with the discovery of a book, and each book is the key to a door behind which danger and glory await. These adventures can be run as one-shot games, plugged into an existing Forgotten Realms campaign, or adapted for other campaign settings. This book also includes a poster map of the library fortress and detailed descriptions of Candlekeep and its inhabitants.

Candlekeep Mysteries will be available starting March 16th, 2021.

A reprint set for Magic: the Gathering containing a selection of cards from the original Time Spiral block, Time Spiral Remastered is a chance to revisit a popular limited format from… checks notes… 15 years ago! Wow!

As a cool added bonus, each pack will contain a timeshifted, old-frame variant of a modern legal card that did not appear in the original Time Spiral.

How about a couple of examples!

Path to Exile
Chalice of the Void

I think these cards look fantastic in this treatment!

Additionally! Any purchase of a box of Time Spiral Remastered will include a foil old-frame Lotus Bloom while supplies last!

Lotus Bloom

Time Spiral Remastered releases March 19th, 2021.

The latest release for the Pokémon Trading Card Game; this set features concepts from Pokémon Sword & Shield’s DLC, The Isle of Armor.

Pokémon in this set can be of two battle styles, Single Strike or Rapid Strike. Single Strike Pokémon focus on dealing a tremendous amount of damage in one blow, while Rapid Strike Pokémon tend to favor more technical encounters.

Due to the wild demand for Pokémon product right now, I cannot offer links to preorder the new set. I do recommend stopping by the shop and seeing what is available on release.

Sword & Shield – Battle Styles will (hopefully) also be available on March 19th, 2021.

It’s time for the 2021 Challenger Decks for Magic: the Gathering!

New Board Games from Asmodee

Hey Friends, it’s Joe!

Today we’ve added a slew of new games published by Asmodee that we’ll have in store early next week! This collection includes some of my favorites like Patchwork, Splendor, and Arkham Horror!

In addition to those, we have some brand new games I’m looking forward to trying out and in this post I’d like to talk about the one I’m most excited about.

Marvel Champions: The Card Game

Marvel Champions: The Card Game is a cooperative living card game set in the Marvel universe! Each player chooses a deck that represents their chosen hero and combines it with an add-on deck that represents various heroic aspects and faces off with the villains of the chosen scenario. Heroes spend time both in and out of costume working to equip themselves to take down the given threat. In the base game, players can play as Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, She-Hulk, or Spider-Man and face off against Klaw, Rhino, or Ultron.

Being a living card game, Fantasy Flight Games has planned a number of expansions that increase the number of playable heroes, along with additional scenarios to face.

I think this looks like a fun game that can be played by up to four players or even solo!

Be sure to check out all the other excellent games by Asmodee that we offer here at The Comic Shop!

Free Magic Tournament on 4/17/2020: Ikoria No-Release!?

Unleash the Beasts

Event Date: April 17th, 2020
Event Format: Sealed Deck
Event Location: DiscordMTG Arena
Featured Set: Ikoria, Lair of Behemoths
Entry Fee: FREE
Prize Pool: $5/player in Store Credit to be 100% distributed!
Match Type: Swiss
Setup Starts: 6:30pm
Event Starts: 7:00pm

While Ikoria’s intended release was supposed to be Friday this week, we’re going to try and do something a little different in order to fill that Magic: the Gathering shaped hole in your life.

How’s this going to work?

The Ikoria No-release will work like this:

  1. Players sign up here this week on The Comic Shop website.
  2. Players gather on The Comic Shop’s Discord channel at 6:30pm Eastern on Friday.
  3. Players build a sealed deck from a pool generated by the instructions below.
  4. The tournament organizer (Joe) will provide the round pairings.
  5. Players friend and send challenges to their opponents to face off with the sealed decks that they built.
  6. Players report their round results to the tournament organizer.
  7. Return to step 3 for the next round!

Generating a sealed pool.

So this is all well and good, but how do we get a sealed pool to use in MTG Arena?

There are two ways you can go about this. Both rely pretty heavily on the honor system so be awesome and have fun!

Buy into a sealed event on Arena and build your 40 card minimum deck using those cards!

Playing the round.

Players should send a friend request to each other in order to be able to issue a challenge. (We’ll update this section to have more detailed instructions on challenging players today or tomorrow.)

Assistance will be available.

I’ll be in the Discord channel during setup if anyone needs help figuring things out. – Joe

This sounds neat so far! How do I join?

Glad you asked friend! Sign up is right here and is limited so sign up early:

Event is over! Thanks to those that participated!

When you sign up for the event, you will be given an invitation to join The Comic Shop’s Discord channel. Queue up there Friday at 6:30 for setup!
